The Sunset Beach Education Center, known locally as the Yeon House, is a historic property in Warrenton, OR featuring over 100 acres of wild dunes and rare Clatsop prairie. Once owned by Portland businessman Norman Yeon, the property has since been transferred from the North Coast Land Conservancy to Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, but years of prior neglect left the landscaping overgrown. With park resources limited, OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers partnered with National Park Service staff to restore the grounds. Their work includes pruning rhododendron thickets, cataloging rhododendron species for public education, and removing invasive plants to support native flora. Volunteers also help protect early blue violet plants—the exclusive host plant for the caterpillar of the endangered Oregon silverspot butterfly. In summer 2025, efforts culminated in the first public property tour: a half mile “Plant Walk” highlighting native plant identification, invasive species management, prairie monitoring, and rhododendron restoration. Over 30 visitors of all ages attended, expressing gratitude for the collaboration between the Master Gardener Program and the National Park Service—an effort that blends conservation, education, and community engagement. Stay tuned for updates regarding another Plant Walk in spring 2026. |
